Angel — Issues 28 & 29
Sigh.
No good.
Well — slight good. Mere, at most. But mostly no.
New writer, Bill Willingham, comes aboard. Goes about setting up a storyline which will grow and evolve in future issues. That’s good. Said storyline is not wholly original and not wholly interesting. That’s bad.
And then everything else is bad. The dialogue, probably the key to any type of Buffy/Angel-verse writing, is not there. He doesn’t get the characters. Everyone sounds the same and talks/act out of character. He decided to keep the angel James and the cat woman Dez from Aftermath, which is pointless because he’s also got Gunn and Illyria and Kate and Connor and Spike to use — with all them, all the originals, you don’t need two nothing characters from a previous bad comic arc. And with the way he’s writing them all the same, it’s just a big bunch of talking heads.
The only potentially interesting thing is the Eddie Hope character. But even that’s not all that interesting. Just some guy they’re building up to be a big-bad later on who will simply die in a fight with Angel (you’d have to assume).
So — guess we all just have to bide our time until Brian Lynch comes back to do something.

Are you sure that isn’t Harry Hamlin on the cover?
Yes — though, given the (poor) quality of the writing, I’m not sure the writer didn’t have something involving Harry Hamlin in mind when he concocted the story and dialogue.
I’ve decided to stop reading this series for now — I really don’t want my Angel ruined for me by this writer. I’ll go back to it when I can discern there’s a change in direction.
