Tracy Re-Fragmented

Director Bruce McDonald is up to something. He’s also on to something. The director of the fabulous Hard Core Logo and Dance Me Outside is giving anyone with a computer and an editing program the opportunity to put together a new edit of his film, The Tracy Fragments. He’s putting all of his footage, and his script, and the soundtrack into the public domain, and letting the internet community do their worst. And their best.I think it’s a great idea, especially for novice editors. The experience of editing professional movie footage, directed by a highly competent and skilled artist, would be an invaluable experience. Not only is it a great way to play around with technique, but it’s also a way to see how a director plans and shoots a scene in order for the editing to make sense later on. Few people really understand the editing process, especially young, emerging filmmakers, whose primary concern is always on the shooting and getting the ‘money shot.’ I hope a lot of people, young and old, take advantage of Bruce’s offer.

I was going to mention this in my Tracey Fragments review (Bruce McDonald talked about it in his Q&A at TIFF). But then I didn’t.
