Buffy Season Eight Is Great

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Just a reminder to all you nerdlingers out there that Issue #1 of the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight (S8) comic arrived in stores last week, immediately selling out and going straight to a second printing. This will be the first time you’ll be seeing middle-aged women at your office reading a comic book — make sure you take lots of pictures.

The issue itself is solid, if unspectacular, filling the role of any good first issue (or first ‘episode’) — addressing the lingering questions we had about the last time we saw the Scooby gang (in very clever ways of course), and setting up new questions about the story arcs to come (like, where did they get all the money to be doing what they’re doing right now?). Some of the most instructive info can actually be found in the fan Q & A at the back of the book; it is revealed that Joss Whedon will next be doing another Serenity comic as well a new Fray series (when he has the time — I’m really looking forward to that!). Plus, a cryptic answer to one of the questions about crossover stories with other comics seems to indicate that Angel (or some of the Angel cast) might make an appearance in S8; this is pretty much necessary for any continuation of the Buffyverse story in my view, but the fact that the ongoing Angel comics are being published by another company made me wonder if it would be possible (due to character and image rights and such). Hopefully they can work all that out.

Now the wait is on for issue #2, in stores April 4.

Dawn: “I could swat you like a flea.”

Buffy: “Your butt looks big in those giant pants.”

I love it!

I’ll give you Viva Las Buffy next time I see you. It’s from the post-Origin, pre-Season 1 era.
