by A.J. Casson (1898-1992)
Anglican Church at Magnetawan   1933
oil on canvas, 94.2 x 115 cm
Purchased 1939, National Gallery of Canada

Casson has always been one of my favourite of the Group of Seven. His paintings share the same kind of streamlined simplicity of Lawren Harris’ work. Strong lighting and formal composition, with seperate blocks of colour, usually distinguish Casson’s work. This painting appealed to me today simply because I thought its summer theme would provide a nice tonic to the current winter blahs. I also remember travelling to Magnetewan as a child while vacationing with family and friends on Amic Lake, so there’s a sentimental thing involved too.tniapcco  llewopemearg
