Planning Model for BeirutI want to point you towards a great article from last Sunday’s Toronto Star by Christopher Hume; it’s about the reconstruction of central Beirut, Lebanon following that country’s civil war of 1975-1990. The project has become one of the high water-marks for urban-planning theory and renewal, turning what was a war-torn and dilapidated city into a thriving Mediterranean port which can once again lay proper claim to its nickname ‘The Paris of the Middle East.’ It’s hard to know at the moment how much of a setback the latest bombings will be on the city and on this project; hopefully there will be a cessation of hostilities soon so the rebuilding process — both of the city and the lives lived within it — can begin anew.
